Tool Mastery: Quizlet

The tool mastery that I have provided is a review of the tool Quizlet. Quizlet is an online application that gives users the opportunity to create sets of flashcards for material they are learning in class. Quizlet has many features, including games, practice tests, and memorization strategies that help users understand the content. Quizlet is a very general tool that can be used for free but also offers affordable upgrades. The sets of flashcards that are created by Quizlet are very beneficial to students because it provides quick and interactive resources when studying for tests or quizzes. To better exemplify this tool’s capabilities, I chose a specific learning requirement from the Alabama Course of Study. For this Science requirement, students in the third grade are asked to:

“Describe Earth’s layers, including inner and outer cores, mantle, and crust. Classifying rocks and minerals by characteristics, including streak, color, hardness, magnetism, luster and texture” [SC(3)].

This standard connects to my tool because I was easily able to locate information and input it into Quizlet in order to create a set of flashcards that could be used as a beneficial study instrument. I found different textual evidence, definitions, and opinions that related to the topic of Geology to create a successful set of flashcards. I was able to exemplify the simple instructions and capabilities of Quizlet while representing how easily it can be utilized by both students and teachers. In a classroom, teachers can use Quizlet to make flashcards covering the material being taught to either introduce new material or help students review to make sure they understand what is being taught. For a formative assessment, teachers can print out the practice quiz that Quizlet creates, ask their students to take it after reviewing and grade the quiz to make sure students are memorizing the terms. Students can best use Quizlet for memorization to review for exams or quizzes. This tool relates to my teaching philosophy because it identifies itself with my beliefs that “learning through repetition is key in the classroom for important topics because it instills a sense of routine and practice of learning”.

The tool that I am choosing to present is Quizlet. Quizlet is an online application that allows you to create virtual flashcards and study sets to cater to any specific needs. I was introduced to Quizlet my freshman year of high school after learning about it from my biology teacher who used it to help students study for his final exam. I have continued to use Quizlet because I enjoy the fast-paced creation process and interactive games and learning activities it provides.

Summary of Usage:

To use Quizlet to its fullest extent, students must have already done research and found the information needed to input into the website. Quizlet allows students to create flashcards for various school subjects and offers various other memorization programs, such as “Learn”, “Speller”, “Test”, “Scatter”, and “Gravity”. These programs continuously test students on their skills and help them memorize the information they provided. Quizlet is a tool that can be accessed by mobile devices or tablets, through the use of an app, or on the web. If using a computer, users are also capable of printing out the flashcard and cutting out the pieces. Within Quizlet, you can sign up for either free or premium services. Quizlet Plus services do not contain advertisements and include the option of adding pictures and recording your own voice into your flashcard set. Quizlet also allows you to explore other users account and sets. This is very beneficial because, instead of creating your own, you can find a set someone else has made and spend more time studying. Quizlet is a very reliable tool because it can be successfully used for any subject in school. In future classrooms, both students and teachers can use this tool. Students can use it to study for exams and homework, while teachers can use it as an aid to help their students succeed in class for lessons or tests. Students and teachers with a basic knowledge of computer skills can use this tool because it involves beginner typing and navigating skills.

Selection Criteria:

I chose Quizlet because it is free, although it does contain affordable upgrades, and permits students to create simple flashcards and utilize various tools and games to help the memorization process. Quizlet contains visually appealing designs that relate to students in today’s generation. It is an easy-to-use website that produces online flashcards quickly, ultimately allowing students to spend more time studying the content. This tool can be used by both teachers and students. Students can utilize Quizlet to create flashcards for a variety of subjects, whether it be English, Science, History, or Math. There are no guidelines as to what needs to be placed in the content area, making it easier for users to create flashcard sets that cater to their specific needs. Quizlet is a very versatile tool because you can use it as a student to study for exams or homework, or as a teacher to teach lessons or help students learn efficiently.

ALCOS Connection:

To better exemplify the tool’s capabilities, I chose a specific learning requirement from the Alabama Course of Study.

  • Science Grade 3: “Describe Earth's layers, including inner and outer cores, mantle, and crust. Classifying rocks and minerals by characteristics, including streak, color, hardness, magnetism, luster, and texture.” [SC(3)]

  • This standard connects to my tool because I was easily able to locate information and input it into Quizlet in order to create a set of flashcards that could be used as a beneficial study instrument. I found different textual evidence, definitions, and opinions that related to the topic of Geology to create a successful set of flashcards. I was able to exemplify the simple instructions and capabilities of Quizlet while representing how easily it can be utilized by both students and teachers. Quizlet allowed me to put together an impressive set of flashcards representing the criteria of the ALCOS connection I chose, which included describing the Earth’s layers and geologic features and listing the definitions and descriptions of the characteristics of rocks.

Levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy:

  • Remember

    • I chose this level because I believe it best conveys the actions and products created within this assignment. For this project, I recalled information and identified and defined the various terms and ideas in order to create a set of flashcards for a science lesson. With these flashcards, users can repeatedly study the terms in order to memorize them. This tool allowed me to employ information I already knew, compile it together, and create a set of flashcards to display these terms. I was easily able to do this with Quizlet because it is a general tool with advanced capabilities that allows you to freely express any topic you choose. In order to complete this assignment, I had to remember the material in order to create the understand, which would further allow me to understand the material what the facts mean and apply it in the classroom.

ISTE Tech Standards:

  • Research and Information Fluency

    • I chose this ISTE Tech Standard because I believe it best applied to the creation and use of information in the set of flashcards I assembled. In order to create this, I had to to locate, organize, and ethically use information from variety of sources to input into the flashcard generator.  By doing this, I was able to use the information I obtained and apply Quizlet to gather, evaluate, and create a beneficial study tool. The set of flashcards I created represents both the teacher’s and student’s use of the tool, because it contains the same material and specific usage for both parties. Quizlet best fits with this standard because it allows you to innovatively research and compile information together to create a sophisticated set of flashcards that can also be used for games and various other memorization tools. Quizlet is very easy to use, furthermore making studying and homework more exciting.

Curriculum Connection:

I used Quizlet to create a set of flashcards exemplifying a science lesson described in ALCOS. I used it to cater to teachers needs by creating flashcards in order to incorporate information students might have missed or been unaware of to further help them succeed in class. It can also be used by students as a means for memorization and studying for any subject in school. The assignment specified to describe the different geologic features of the earth and characteristics of rocks. I was able to recall information from previous years and compile it together to create a set of flashcard that can be accessed from a computer or on mobile devices. Through this assignment, I was able to include a science state standard. I believe that Quizlet is a very reliable tool and is flexible enough to use for almost all state standards because it can be used by the general public, not one specific group of people, to create encouraging study tools and habits in order to remember and understand material
